We are having a nother working bee at the Nunnery (check http://www.bikeclub.wordpress.com) to kull bikes and generaly tidy up. The last working bee got a lot of good stuff sorted, like the shed, the tool boards, signs and labeling systems. Yay. Now we’ve simply got too much stuff!! We need your help….

kulling bikes for the Petersham Men’s Shed (They make wheelchairs from adult frames)

Sending scrap metal off to a merchant somewhere, does someone have a ute?

Kulling ‘projects’ that have been unloved too long

Sorting out a better opener/closer roster and on sight info for newbies

Okay so I might be interested but what are the deets?

Where: Nunnery (but of course) the backyard of 40 Forbes St Newtown- check out this map
When: 4 till 9.30 every monday for the next month we’ll be kulling and sorting. Plus 11am till dark Sunday 29th of July which will hopefuly be a big bike club meeting too. We’d like to talk about different bike projects, and how they can help each other. For instance we are sending kulled stuff to africa or to be made into wheelchairs, or to a scrap metaler who is stock pilling bikes for us to choose from and take back to newtown. For more info call jp on 0401447675

What if I only have a small amount of time?

That would be great because every little bit that you can offer will help. Even if it is to come by and say “Hi guys”, provide hugs, and then leave again. We’d really like to spruce things up and get our new system rolling out the Nunnery.

They’re riding from Rockhampton all the way to Canberra. It’ll pass through Newcastle/Sydney around the 21st of August so that would be a good time/place for Sydney people to go and meet them and do part of the ride. If you’re wondering what they’re up to, they put it this way:

We are a comunity of people concerned about the false claim that nuclear technology will provide a clean green solution to climate change. We hope to promote truly clean and green energy alternatives, while building a pro-active cycling community and having fun.

How rad is that! (You can also make donations at their website)

The problem being is that the smartpoles are not anywhere outside the CBD – well the council have come up with a unique solution. They are going to replace the existing street poles and put rings on them. Also for the rollout BikeSydney, Bikeast and MASSbug will be recommending where they are placed. Check out the photos below.

“Get off the F*#king Road!”

Namaste My Devotees!

There may be a day while you are riding your bike. A motorist passes you, and calls out, “Get off the fucking road!” You may be puzzled. What do these words mean?

The key to understanding the cry of the motorist’s is to realize that the road does not copulate with itself. Rather, it is you who is partnered with the road.

Have you not had a day, where you get out there on your bike, and there is the road before you, warm, inviting? It feels good, it smells good, it almost seems to taste good to be on it. Some days you start out eager, knowing what lies ahead. Other days you start out a little reluctantly — surely you have better things to do — clean the house, mow the lawn — but here you are anyway, your bike and the road together, and after a little bit you know its going to be a good time.

There are days when you dominate the road. It does your bidding. You groove on your control. There are other days when the road is your master. You submit to its demands. You get a perverted pleasure from the pain of your burning legs, your oxygen-starved lungs screaming for air.

In any of these instances, though, you with your bike, and the road, are lovers. The term, “get off” as we all know, is a slang term that means to “derive pleasure”. Thus, the encouraging, if crude, words, “Get off the fucking road” can be understood as “Enjoy yourself as you and the road make beautiful love together”.

To take this a step further — in many mystical traditions, the physical act of love is understood as a metaphor for the spiritual union of human with the Divine. Can you ride as if you and the Road are One?

The mudra of the single upraised digit is a reminder of this oneness: unity in Christ Consciousness, being at one with the Tao, La illaha Il’ Allah, Adonai Echad. Thus, when someone makes this gesture at you, you should understand that they are wishing you the experience of this ecstatic union.

The horn that is honked as the mudra is made is a meditation bell. Like a church bell, like the call of the muezzin’s voice, it calls you into this sacred space of union, of you, your bike, and the road, as One.

Thus, when the motorist honks his horn, raises the single digit, and makes his sincere invocation, you have but one response: to smile, to wave, and return to the joy of riding your bike.

The paintings were all hung yesterday and they’re really beautiful.

For those that don’t know there will be a State Election on the 24th March in NSW. This is probably the best I have seen in regards to the organisation of cycling information and resoures available to us. The cycling Promotion Fund have created a fantastic resource at http://www.vote4cycling.com.au – This site is full of great information about the state of cycling within NSW and when compared to other states how far we are behind. You can also email all the canditates in each region.

Also available is the Bicycle NSW 2007 policy request that has been sent to every minister ( http://www.bicyclensw.org.au/Assets/Downloads/BicycleNSW_PolicyRecommendations.pdf).

Bicycle NSW have also invited the three main parties, Labor, Liberal and Greens to speak about their cycling policies to the board. So far the Liberals and the Greens have responded no word from the Labor Party.

Bicycle NSW will be publishing the results of the meetings so expect something there. Vote4Cycling also sent every member a 30 question survey (survey is available on the web). The results of that are also to be published on the web.

So even thou it looks like it will be a Labor Gov next time aroud there are some key seats that could go other ways. So what I say is check out what is there and write to you local member and ask them some tricky questions. And let them know that for you cycling is an issue.

The City of Sydney is providing free secure bicycle parking for up to
320 bicycles at both Jazz and Symphony in the Domain, part of the Sydney
Festival.

If you are attending the concerts, help keep Sydney’s air clean and
reduce traffic congestion by cycling to the events. Cycling is also
great for your health and fitness.

City of Sydney will be giving away free bike pumps to the first 20
cyclists to use the bicycle parking facility at each Domain Concert.

Security guards will be manning the bike parking throughout.
When:
Jazz in the Domain, Saturday 13th January

Symphony in the Domain, Saturday 20th January

Opening times:
3:30pm – 11:15pm
(The concerts commence at 8pm and finish at approximately 10:30pm)

Location:
The secure bicycle parking area is located behind the stage, on the
corner of Art Gallery and Hospital Roads. Access is from Art Gallery
Road.

Bike locks:
While the bicycle racks will be within a fenced area patrolled by
security, cyclists are required to supply their own bike locks/chains to
secure their bikes to the rack.

Whilst the City of Sydney will take care of bikes left in this bike
parking area, the City of Sydney, Sydney Festival and Botanic Gardens
Trust takes no responsibility for any damage to, or loss of, your bike
or other property as a result of your use of the bike parking.
